Terävä jääkäripuukko review

I do miss the thumb extension for unsheathing the knife that is on the Skrama sheath, though. Why is the newer SRK not as good as the original Carbon V?"

Plainly speaking, the newer SRK in SK5 is just not as robust as the original Carbon V or as easy to sharpen.

Performance-wise it competes quite well with both, but is a fair bit cheaper than both.

Again, like the Skrama, it has a double bevel grind, meaning it has a small, second bevel close to the edge. I don’t really use it though as the knife is quite secure as it is. Apart from the brute Hukari nothing like this was available on the Finnish market.

This steel is surrounded and protected by a slightly softer steel, further enhancing the Varusteleka Jääkäripuukko’s rugged durability. And be sure to subscribe to our Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube channels. But you would be hard pressed to find such a versatile knife, with this amount of strength and finesse, at such a low cost.

In issue 12, Offgrid Magazinetook a hard look at what you should be aware of in the event of a viral outbreak.

The blade came hair shaving sharp out of the box and has a good balanced feel in your hand just begging to be put to work.

“The Jääkäripuukko is not designed to sit on a shelf for decoration; this is an honest tool made for hard work.”~varusteleka.com

I took it out to the backyard lab and went to work creating fuzz sticks and shavings for starting a fire.

Even the tough leather sheath is built with substantial sturdiness. Let’s find out.

Jääkäripuukko – The Hunter’s Knife

The Jääkäripuukko shares many of the same basic features of the Skrama, but of course with some differences. Again -- no problem.

Finally, the Dutch duo hammered the knife sideways into a log and then the big guy, who is built like a viking, stood on the blade and BOUNCED on it to try and break it.

All attachments are made with numerous strong studs.

  • 6 cm wide belt loop
  • D-ring swivelled belt loop
  • Snug fitting press stud strap secured the knife properly in its place.
  • A grommet for a leg tie has been added to the tip.
  • Drainage hole at bottom.
  • Inside the leather sits the standard sturdy Skrama plastic sheath, a thumb knob on the side of the mouth makes unsheathing easy and controlled.
  • The design is based off of a historical, Nordic “broken-back” scramaseax design, most commonly used in the north of the British Isles, but also elsewhere.

What better place to test it out than the frozen hardwood forests of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan?

My jaw almost hit the forest floor when I batoned a forearm thick branch from a fallen tree. This eventually led Varusteleka to create their own knife aiming at the same users, and thus their Jääkäripuukko was presented. The Terava's leather sheath definitely exudes a higher level of quality than the SRK's Secure-Ex sheath:

    FIELD TEST

To see if Varusteleka's Terava knife would live up to its description, I took it high up into the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, an unrelenting and harsh environment, to test its abilities.

    Batoning

To test the batoning capability of the Terava, I selected a piece of very twisted Cottonwood and split it into kindling.

During my military service, chopping down trees for camouflage, firewood, shelters etc. This modern twist by Varusteleka over a traditional wood or bone handle improves grip, even in the most slippery of conditions. Varusteleka Terävä Jääkäripuukko Review

    In This Article

As someone who has spent countless hours in the Great Outdoors and served in the military conducting combat reconnaissance missions, I have come across my fair share of knives.

This piece was extremely difficult to split and some of the pieces literally broke off rather then just splitting. The SRK has an enclosed stick tang that runs the length of the handle.

The Terava's tip is noticeably thicker than the current SK5 version of the SRK. The original Carbon V SRKs had much thicker tips (like the Terava).
